Local calls improve call quality: how do you enable them?

Connecting via the GSM network improves call quality: use your Libon minutes outside the app with local calls

To improve call quality, we’ve launched a new feature called local calls, which lets you use your Libon minutes without needing an internet connection.

Requirements

⚠️ Before activating Local Calls, please make sure you have an unlimited mobile plan with your mobile carrier that includes calls to landline numbers in your country.

🇺🇸 If your phone number is from the United States, your plan must include calls to U.S. landlines.

🇨🇦 If your phone number is from Canada, your plan must include calls to Canadian landlines.

Why?

To enable this feature, Libon uses an landline number (+1…) from the country where you live as an access point. This number is used to route your calls through the traditional telephone network (GSM).

Please make sure that your mobile carrier does not charge additional fees for calls to landline numbers.

To activate this feature on your Libon account, please contact our support team. 🤝

Activate the local calls feature from your app

From your Profile > Settings > Call Settings, turn off the Always ask me option.

If you enable both Wi-Fi/Data and Phone Line, the app will offer you both options for each call. This allows you to try the second option if the first one does not work properly.

⚠️ Warning: If the local call option is the only one enabled, all calls will go through the regular phone network (GSM) instead of the Internet.

Start your call from the app

To place a call, select the contact you want to call, then tap Internet Network.

On iPhone, confirm your call by tapping the blue Call +1… button.

On Android, the call will start automatically without any confirmation.

Rest assured, this landline number is not the number you are calling. It is used only to route your call through the GSM network.

Your call will then be transferred to your phone’s native calling app, meaning the regular call screen, without going through Libon.

Calls made using the local call option are charged only to your Libon account minutes. 🥳

Since the call is routed through Libon’s telephone servers, no minutes from your mobile plan will be charged.

Deactivate the local calls feature from your app

If you're traveling abroad, remember to turn off local calls. When roaming, using the GSM network can result in high charges. In this case, choose the Wi-Fi/Data option in the app's call settings. 😊

If you want disable the local calls, go to Profile > Settings > Call Settings and enable the Wifi/ Data option. 🪄

Local calls are only available for accounts with a number based in France 🇫🇷, Spain 🇪🇸, Italy 🇮🇹, the United States 🇺🇸, Canada 🇨🇦, and Latvia 🇱🇻.
